Judy Schneider is a painter and printmaker currently living in Falmouth, Maine. She received her Masters’ degree in studio art from Maine College of Art. Her paintings are currently at Chilton’s Furniture in Freeport and will be showcased at Fogg Lighting in Portland in the fall of 2016. In Maine her work has also been shown at Continuum for Creativity in Westbrook, The Commons Art Collective in Norway, Hole in the Wall Studioworks in Raymond, Red Thread in Portland and the ICA at MECA. The Maine landscape persists as a critical part of Judy’s art practice. In July 2014, she was awarded an artist residency at the Pace House in Stonington, Maine. In March 2015 she continued her exploration at the Vermont Studio Center. Immersed in her surroundings - she studies and details the larger world of earth, sky and water by making sketches, and pastel “plein air” paintings, while also gathering remnants of grasses, rocks, seaweed etc., which reflect the smaller world. In the studio she experiments with scale, value and texture associated with these places. With memory as a guide, the images shift, flatten and open up again as representation recedes and something else takes over. Density and layering are important. How the images find their natural edge and how memories form present a nice duality. She is in pursuit of what is physically present, woven with memory, dreams and how the energy of “place” is conveyed. These pastel paintings are moments in time where ideas are formed and memories are made – found in the Maine landscape.
