Penny Markley – Artist Penny Markley of Winthrop, Maine, explains what inspires her work: “The scenery, light, and changing seasons of Maine enchant me. My paintings capture my reaction to this visual wealth. I love the coast, but I live inland, and I find great beauty in fields, hills, marshes, lakes, and mountains found away from the coast. When I paint or sketch the landscape, I feel that I am a participant, not just an observer, and I notice things I don’t see otherwise.” Since retiring from other occupations Penny has discovered she loves plein air painting. She is a member of Plein Air Painters of Maine and paints regularly with a couple of plein air groups. She recently returned from four days of painting in or around Baxter Park. In the Spring she spent a week participating in a plein air event in Tamworth, NH. Penny studied drawing at Columbia while a student at Barnard College in New York City and has studied art at the University of Maine in Augusta, taken classes at the Maine College of Art, and had small group classes with Tina Ingraham. She has taken workshops with nationally know painters, Ron Ranson, Skip Lawrence, George Van Hook, and three workshops with Colin Page. In August of 2018 she participated in a 5 day plein air workshop taught by Mark Boedges. Her work has been accepted into juried shows in Maine and out of state and has hung in the Office of the President of the Maine State Senate, at the State House in Augusta. It is in private collections in the United States and England. For two years in a row the Communications Director of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection has purchased one of her landscapes to give as an award to an outstanding employee. Penny grew up in Maine and attended Augusta schools. Leaving Maine for New York City, she graduated from Barnard College with a B.A. in American Studies, and from Columbia Teachers College with a M.A. in Special Education. She has worked as a teacher and an apple grower. She moved back to Maine when she and her husband purchased Lakeside Orchards in Manchester, a town just west of Augusta. Penny and her husband worked full-time in the apple business for 21 years. Although she always found time to paint and draw except during harvest, now that she is now retired from other employment, she has been able to devote more time to painting and traveling with her husband, Reed.
