ABOUT ELAINE FLETCHER *About My Painting: Light, Clarity & Edges I have painted professionally my whole adult life, working in oils and watercolors. Scenes of Maine life & work are the inspiration for many of my paintings, and light often plays a role in in selecting and interpreting a subject. I look for ways that light can assist with clarity and edges, which are building blocks of the interesting details that build my image, and the "story" it often contains. I'd like my viewer to feel rewarded for looking closely. *Education, Studios, and work as an Art teacher: - Bachelor's degree in Art Education, with Highest Distinction, University of Maine at Orono. Senior Studio in oil painting with Dr.Michael Lewis. - Continuing education at the University of Southern Maine, Portland, and at Maine College of Art, Portland. - Thirty years teaching art at the elementary and middle school levels in Maine's schools, the last twenty-five years in Yarmouth, Maine - Studied with Cooper Dragonette, at Haystack Mt School of Crafts. - Continuing study with Diane Dahlke, in a small local weekly group she mentors - Retirement from teaching has allowed me to grow considerably as an artist. I value the increased time I now have to discover, reflect on, and to paint some of the unique places our state offers us. *Shows & Commissions: In addition to painting from my own choices, I also paint on commission. My work has been commissioned many times by former Maine Senator Olympia Snow as her official holiday card art, beginning in the early 2000's and continuing through the present. I also paint scenes that are special to others, whether a favorite place they've visited, or a portrait of a beloved dwelling My work has been shown and sold in juried group shows, Maine Art Education Association art shows at MECA and the Saco Museum of Art, and in restaurants in coastal Maine.
