Link Stevens

South Portland, Maine

THE ARTIST Link Stevens is a life-long New Englander, calling Maine home for the last 25 years. When not working as a substance abuse counselor and therapist, Link is an avid fisherman and waterman. He has a profound respect and appreciation for creatures of the ocean. Throughout the year, you will often find him walking the beaches or boating off the Maine coast. All of the materials in Link’s artwork are gathered from the Maine shoreline, the islands of Casco Bay and local salvage sites. Each piece is one-of-a-kind. THE FISH Menhaden, also known as mossbunker, bunker or pogie, provide essential food for several important recreational and commercial fish, such as striped bass, weakfish, cod, and bluefin tuna, seabirds like osprey, eagles, porpoises, seals and whales. Menhaden are the glue that holds the ocean ecosystem together. The Menhaden fishery is the largest on the U.S. East Coast. The majority of Menhaden (80%) are ground up for use in fish oil dietary supplements, fertilizers, and animal feed. Due to over fishing, this essential species has been depleted to a critical level, having far reaching and possibly catastrophic effects on the predatory fish, birds and sea mammals that rely on it for survival. link@maine.rr.com
