Susan Hanson I am a retired art educator and artist living in Southern Maine. I worked with textiles for many years creating art quilts with hand-dyed, silkscreened and painted fabrics. I am also a photographer. The work I did in textiles, painting with thickened dyes, working with color and silk screening, flowed naturally into painting which is my main interest now. I work in oils and acrylic and like experimenting with texture and using a palette knife. I am inspired by the landscape and ocean. Being in nature gives me a sense of calm and a way to engage the senses. My response to the changing seasons, light, atmosphere, weather and how these elements effect the landscape is what I like to portray in my paintings. These impressions are immediate and stay with me whether it’s walking the beach and observing the shapes of clouds and changing light playing on the water or observing color as the light changes. Places that have inspired me are Baxter State Park, Mt. Desert Island, Mt Agamenticus, Laudholm Farms, Casco Bay, marshes, gardens and beaches. I mainly paint in the studio from quick sketches and color notes on location. I also use my own photographs as reference and play with color and composition. Maine has so many unique qualities and natural beauty and is endlessly inspiring to me as a painter.
