Susan Hanson
Saco, Maine

SUSAN HANSON I am a former elementary art teacher and since retiring I’ve had more time to devote to painting. My main muse is the land and water. I’m lucky to live near the coastline, marshes and forests where I find endless inspiration. The big open sky with sweeping clouds over marshland and ocean are dramatic and exhilarating. Forests are moody and mysterious. I like to experience these places by walking around, feeling the breeze or sit for a while and watch the light change. I’ll take photos and make quick sketches with a variety of media from gouache to pens and markers. I work mainly in my studio. I am not a en plein air painter. I work in acrylic which allows me to work in multiple layers and quickly make changes if I want. I like to play with color mixing and different tools. I will begin a painting and recall the mood, feeling or impression a scene evoked and try to portray that.
