Description: This painting was painted in plein air on the Castine Wharf at sunrise in July. It was a painting that was a part of Michael's Castine portfolio for the 2018 Castine Plein Air Festival of which he was the First Place winner. This painting has a beautiful transition of light and color from warm morning light tones to in between mixtures, to cool shadow tones where the sun has yet to reach. The painting depicts a calm luminous light that bathes the still harbor and Michael's impasto application of oil paint and black oil wax medium adds to the bold and direct quality of this piece. Michael painted this in the old Venetian style of painting which eliminates turpentine and solvents for a richer semi-transparent sheen that not only make the colors buttery and richer but also prevents the painting from cracking over time. It is framed in a plein air gold leaf frame which also adds to the presentation of the summer's morning light.
